In-depth Visual Function Assessment

In-depth Visual Function Assessment

Efficient visual function is crucial for comfortable and effective vision.  At Visionary Eyecare Centre, our optometrists employ a developmental and behavioural optometric approach to address these concerns and focus on evaluating various aspects of visual function.

Some key areas of assessment include:

•  Risk of Amblyopia

•  Binocular Coordination and Depth Perception

•  Accommodation (i.e. visual focus) and Vergence Function

•  Eye Movement Control

It is important to note that vision screening alone cannot detect all vision problems, and children often do not report symptoms as they assume everyone sees in the same way. Therefore, early detection through comprehensive visual assessments and appropriate intervention is crucial.

Parents, carers and teachers should be alert to the following symptoms:

• Skipping line/word(s) or losing their place while reading

• Excessive head movement while reading (sideways/back and forth movement)

• Closing one eye to see

• Complaints of transient blurry vision, double vision or words moving on page while reading

• Complaints of headaches or eye strain while reading

• Errors in copying

• Tilting the head to one side

With early detection, appropriate optical management (such as prescription eyeglasses) and vision therapy can be implemented if necessary. By addressing visual functional concerns early on, we aim to optimise children's visual abilities, support their learning journey, boost their self-esteem, and contribute to their overall well-being.
