Vision and learning are closely intertwined. Research indicates that up to 80% of information learned in the classroom is visually related. At Visionary Eyecare Centre, our behavioural optometrists specialise in assessing vision-related learning difficulties. We consider how patients process visual information, known as visual perceptual skills, which are crucial for tasks such as reading comprehension, writing, spelling, mathematics, and other visual-based activities. Challenges in visual perception can significantly impact learning, attention, and overall performance.
Early identification of visual perception difficulties is key. With early detection, appropriate optometric treatment and relevant learning strategies can be implemented to support learning. This may include accommodations within the school environment and multidisciplinary management involving psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and other professionals.
Parents, carers and teachers should be alert to the following symptoms:
• Letter reversal (e.g. confusion between b/d, p/q)
• Confusion with similar words (e.g. them/then)
• Reading in a random order
• Difficulties in reading comprehension
• Difficulties in spelling
• Difficulties in understanding abstract concepts (e.g. Maths and geometric concepts)
If any of these symptoms are observed, it is important to consider the possibility of vision-related learning difficulties. A comprehensive assessment by our optometrists can help identify and address these challenges, leading to appropriate interventions and support to facilitate learning.
